Introducing the Umbraco Bluesky Labeler
2 min read
With the recent boom of Bluesky users comes a lot if interesting and exciting community initiatives born from it’s open API. One such interesting project that piqued my interest came from merill.net who recently launched bluesky.ms, a Bluesky labeler to help highlight Microsoft employees and MVPs.
It was such a cool idea I thought it would be fun to give it a go, creating a labeler for the Umbraco community.
Bluesky Labelers
Labelers are part of Bluesky’s moderation features and are intended to be used to flag potentially harmful content. Anyone can create a labeler service which gives users choice over which provider to subscribe to, giving users control over what content they wish to see.
Whilst intended for moderation, the community saw a fun opportunity with labelers to create essentially custom badges for accounts / profiles.
The Umbraco Bluesky Labeler
On that theme, and much like the bluesky.ms labeler, the Umbraco Bluesky Labeler is a fun way to highlight key people in the community that newcomers might wish to connect with.
It currently supports two labels:
- Umbraco HQ - Umbraco HQ members
- Umbraco MVP - Umbraco MVPs
To subscribe to the labeler, locate the @umbracolabeler.bsky.social account in your Bluesky app and click the Subscribe to Labeler button that appears on it’s profile.
Now when you come across a HQ or MVP members profiles / posts you’ll see a label highlighting their status.
How do you get a label?
Labels are entirely opt-in so we won’t show a HQ or MVP label for anyone that doesn’t want to be highlighted as such. But if you are a HQ member or MVP and want to proudly show the relevant badge on your profiles, head on over to the GitHub repo where the code for the labeler is held and submit a PR to one of the JSON files that hold the relevant member records (Full instructions are in the README).
Wrapping up
I hope this provides an interesting way for people to find each other and connect on Bluesky. I’m really excited to see cool ideas like this being created and tested in the community.
Happy labeling 🏷️
